FAQs

Where did the name Studio 52 come from?
STUDIO: A safe space where artists learn, collaborate, discover, and explore creative possibilities.
52: Flat Rock Playhouse was officially established in 1952!

What age student can participate at Studio 52?
Current programs are for artists in Kindergarten through 12th grades, though we hope to expand to adult education in the near future.

Do I have to live in North Carolina to take a virtual program with Studio 52?
Virtual theatre classes and workshops allow young artists to connect from all across the country! Current classes include students from Florida, Georgia, Arkansas, Maryland, Connecticut, Tennessee, Texas, and New York.

Do students need prior experience to participate in a class or workshop at Studio 52?
Unless otherwise specified in a class description, no prior experience is required to learn with Studio 52. All we ask is that young artists bring their imaginations and enthusiasm. Faculty at Studio 52 approach learning with a sense of joy and adventure and will work with each student to build confidence and motivate them in their personal artistic journey.

What is a virtual theatre class?
Studio 52 is committed to creating the best-possible experience for young artists during times of social distancing. Virtual theatre classes combine all of the most important elements of an in-person theatre class - movement, music, improvisation, small group collaborations, big group discussions, performance, and fun in an easy-to-use virtual classroom.

Do virtual theatre classes have a final performance?
Classes that meet for a full semester include some element of a virtual performance. While the emphasis of Studio 52 is the process of creating theatre together, we believe that every student deserves to take a bow and receive applause for their hard work and courage!

What supplies do I need to participate in a virtual theatre class?
A device (preferably a computer but smaller devices also work), stable internet, Zoom installed on your computer, headphones (for musical theatre students), a distraction-free learning space, imagination, creativity, and a sense of adventure.

Who teaches Studio 52 classes?
Studio 52 has assembled a fun and experienced faculty of professional educators and artists. While each teaching artist brings their own flare and unique perspective to the classroom, all faculty are committed to creating a safe and fun learning environment.

Can I pay for tuition in installments?
Yes. Partial payments for tuition-based Virtual Theatre Classes may be made over the phone by calling the Box Office at (828) 693-0731. A $50 deposit is required to secure the student’s spot in the class.

Are discounts available for multiple students or multiple classes?
Students and families that register for more than one class are offered a $25 discount for each additional class. This offer applies to multiple classes for one student or family discounts for siblings.

Are scholarships available?
Yes! Scholarships are available for all tuition-based classes and camps. The Dave Hart Scholarship Fund was created in memory of Studio 52's friend, artist, and educator Dave Hart. Through this important program, a small number of full and partial need-based scholarships are available upon application for all tuition-based programs. The application form includes basic student, guardian, and household information as well as a short written statement outlining the purpose and significance of a scholarship.

Please note that scholarships are not available for donation-based workshops.
